Libraries are havens for bookworms, but their sheer size and voluminous contents require clear signage. Library signs are essential and may include library rules, adverts for upcoming activities, as well as information about the books and resources available in the library.
Make sure these are large and colourful enough to attract visitors’ attention. Rules may include requests for indoor voices, no smoking signs, no food or drink signs or warnings about damage to the books.
Librarians may advertise book week, book signings or other pending activities on easily removable, temporary signs or posters that may be tacked up on the wall or any other available surface in the library.
Books are undoubtedly the most important feature in the library. Potential readers need to be clear about the location of each book. There is a multitude of signage to choose from – books may be sorted by title, by subject or alphabetically by author with the latter being the most popular. However you choose to sort them, the most important thing is to have clear, easy-to-read labels. Make sure that fonts are black and large enough to read from a distance and that the labels are placed strategically.
